Dear Friends,

The last few months have been extremely busy for ASC!
On the one hand, we have been actively engaging with a host of new opportunities to voice our concerns and recommendations regarding Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers.
On the other hand, we have been labouring hard to support a burgeoning client caseload – with unprecedented numbers of destitute and traumatized asylum seekers approaching our small centre for vital assistance.

We are heartened by Minister Evans recent public commitment to the humane treament of asylum seekers and refugees. We also welcome the abolition of the ruthless temporary protection regime and the continuation of pilot initiatives to provide welfare and case management assistance to some highly vulnerable asylum seekers, that were announced in tonight's federal budget. Read more here.

We remain confronted, nonetheless, by the desperate reality that, despite residing lawfully in the community while awaiting an outcome on their claims for refugee protection or permission to remain in Australia on other humanitarian grounds, the vast majority of our clients are ineligible to work or to access Medicare or Centrelink benefits. Many hold skills and qualifications which Australia currently needs - and crave the opportunity to self-support.

In the lead-up to national volunteer week, we extend heartfelt thanks to our amazing 80-strong network of volunteers for their diverse and indispensable contributions to our humanitarian efforts. Read about the amazing contributions made by those who devote their skills and time for free.

Following world health day, last month, we honour one of our longest-serving volunteers - Professor Mark Harris of the University of NSW, who, for over 7 years has run a busy clinical practice, for destitute, Medicare-ineligible asylum seekers, from our modest premises, half a day per week. Mark’s dedication and compassion are immensely valued by all whom he has treated and worked alongside. Read Mark’s reflections on his involvement with ASC.

We are in the final countdown to our HUGELY popular Quiz Night on 16th May – which promises to be the biggest and most colourful yet! We have almost filled our 500-seat capacity! Final seats can be booked here and you can view images of previous years.

As you may be aware, ASC receives no state or federal government funding and relies entirely upon philanthropic grants and public donations to keep our doors open.

With ever-increasing demand for our service, now, more than ever, we desperately need the support of our friends in order to sustain our humanitarian work. We are determined to survive to celebrate our fifteenth birthday, later this year, in the company of our friends. For as little as $10 per month, please consider becoming a Friend of ASC and a vital contributor to our work.

As ever, warmest thanks for your much needed support from all of us here at ASC!

Please forward this on to others who may be interested in learning more about what to do.
