Dear friend,
Welcome to the Asylum Seekers Centre of NSW (ASC) first e-newsletter! It’s linked to our new website, which we hope you’ll enjoy exploring.
You are receiving
this because you have expressed an interest in our work or are already
a valued supporter. And so a very warm THANK-YOU – with a rapidly
rising caseload
(we helped over 250 new clients last year) we need all the friends we
can rally in order to sustain our humanitarian work!
Did you know that over 90%* of our clients are not allowed to work or to access Centrelink or Medicare benefits
despite having permission to live in the community? And did you know that this situation can persist for many years?
* as at May 2006
Most of
the asylum seekers with whom we work crave the opportunity to
self-support, and yet are utterly dependent upon charity to meet their
basic subsistence needs, including access to food, shelter and urgent
health care. Read brief testimonies from two of our clients.
Granting work
rights to all asylum seekers would greatly diminish the extreme
hardships to which we bear witness daily. In the context of
International Anti-Poverty Week and a looming federal election,
consider using your voice in support of asylum seekers by writing to your local MP to call for an end to enforced destitution.
And please consider becoming a FRIEND OF ASC.
Your monthly gift will enable us to continue providing urgently needed
support to an
extremely vulnerable population. As a FRIEND, you will be welcomed with
a beautiful 2008 calendar and gift cards, as well as opportunities to
meet our clients and other supporters. In fact, we’ll be inviting you
to join us at an evening Thank You event
for all our FRIENDS (including existing volunteers) at a harbour-side
venue on 4th December.
Finally
- a big congratulations to all involved in 2007 Quiz Night, once again
hosted by the hilarious, gargantuan-hearted HG Nelson and Tony Squires,
for making this year’s event our most successful yet. Find out more and view our quiz night photo gallery.
Please forward this on to others who may be interested in learning more about what we do. If you’d
prefer not to receive future editions please simply unsubscribe
(you will not receive a confirmation).
Once again - warmest thanks for your much needed support from all of us here at ASC.
