April Pan, has been working hard for ASC assisting with fundraising and personnel projects.
Fulfilling her dream to pursue a worthwhile career working with disadvantaged people such as refugees and asylum seekers, April has coordinated the sales of the Sydney Entertainment books, as well as researching appropriate organizations for ASC to apply for grants. Additionally, April is updating the volunteer skill database and is beginning to develop a ‘job-seeking skills’ program assisting clients with résume writing and interview skills etc. Currently she is preparing a list of resources on employment services. Thank you for your enthusiasm and on-going support April. What were you doing before working at ASC?Before I moved to Sydney in early 2008, I worked for the British Council in Guangzhou, China for many years, involving in the marketing and communications of all sorts of British Council's cultural and education activities. I worked for an animal welfare organisation in Sydney for a year before I decided I wanted a career in community services, so I started my Master program at UNSW this year. What have you found most meaningful? What I have found most meaningful is to see so many people willing to give their time and skills to help asylum seekers. While many Australians still have negative perceptions about refugees and asylum seekers, it’s very encouraging to know that so many people do care and support this disadvantaged group. What have you gained from the experience? Definitely the valuable work experience, the pride from knowing that my work is contributing to such a worthwhile cause and the opportunity to meet new people. Oh and how can I forget those incredible Wednesday feasts with such yummy food!
