Lucienne Fontannaz-Howard facilitated art workshops for asylum seekers and curated the successful 'A Place to call Home' Art Exhibition in 2008.
Why did I get involved?
For many years I have been wishing to help asylum seekers through developing their art, and when I realized there was a centre in Surry Hills, I immediately thought I could commit some of my time, and even a lot of it when the exhibition date approached!
I do feel strongly about the difficulties many asylum seekers encounter here in Australia. I am fortunate enough to be citizen of 3 peaceful and safe countries, after obtaining the Australian citizenship easily and therefore I am drawn to the plea of those less fortunate in this regard.
What did I find meaningful?
The students in the art class had no experience with making lino prints, yet they enjoyed the work, they developed rapidly their ideas for creating images as well as their skills for cutting and printing the lino. As the students made more and more art works, they felt increasingly confident to tell stories through the images, to represent places, people, animals they care for. Their artworks became progressively more personal and meaningful for themselves and for the viewer.
What have I gained?
I have had wonderful opportunities to connect more closely with my students through teaching, preparing the exhibition, taking a group to a remarkable exhibition of lino prints or through interaction with several other clients in the Centre.
The Asylum Seekers Centre is, I feel, a very warm and welcoming place, where anyone can feel at home, volunteers included. It has been a great pleasure for me to get to know so many wonderful people and it has been most rewarding to see my work appreciated by the students as well as by the staff.
So thank you to all,
Lucienne
