Asylum Seekers Centre

Riena Voss has designed and managed the production of the ASC calendar over the last three years.   

Why did you get involved with ASC?
I initially found out about the Asylum Seekers Centre (ASC) through my oldest and best friend who was working at the centre. Hearing about what she and everyone does at ASC really touched me.

My father moved to Australia as a young child with his mother, sister and two brothers. He and his family spent several years separated from his father while their Visas were being processed. I know first hand what effects this can have on a family. I couldn’t believe that our government still forced families into this situation.


What have you found meaningful about your volunteer experience with us
I found it hurtful and infuriating that today individuals are still facing the difficulties that my father and grandparents proud by learning from their experience. Family is hugely important to me. I feel that ASC nurtures family, respects heritage and provides family for those without it. I feel proud to be part of that.

 
What have you gained from the experience
On a daily basis I work hard and I work long hours. While I love my job it is important that some of my time and skills base is used to help others without prospering myself. Working with ASC makes me feel good about what I do.
